Central youth society "Miljenko Cvitković" was founded in April 1947, KUD Bašcaršija continues their tradition from 1994. After the foundation a lot of young people, art lovers and others, gathered up. In first years of its existence, society becomes one of the best and most developed amateur group in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The society cherishes different artistic genres: choral singing, fine arts, folk heritage and visual art. In addition to its successful artistic and educational influence and stage appearance society is characterized by warmth of friendship as a manifestation of the most beautiful human values.
KUD Bašcaršija was awarded by a great number of orders such as: highest prize award of the City of Sarajevo "Šestoaprilska nagrada Sarajeva", 1st of May award, Order of Brotherhood and Unity with Silver Wreath, Acknowledgment of Tourist bureau of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Acknowledgment of Old Town municipality, Gold medal of Association of amateur cultural-artistic groups of Bosnia and Herzegovina and many other.
There is a miraculous traditional folklore treasure, cherished and advanced, in this relatively small geographical area, in multinational Bosnia and Herzegovina. KUD "Baščaršija", with its folklore ensemble and orchestra, is meritorious for preservation and presentation of our traditional folklore tradition. The repertoire is consisted of traditional folk dances and customs of ethnic groups from Bosnia and Herzegovina, accompanied by orchestra and traditional instruments in colored folk costumes. All the dances have choreography. Folk ensemble started its first international tour in July 1958. The destinations were Nice and Canes.
For almost half a century KUD "Baščaršija" successfully represents our town and country in large number of European, Asian and African countries. We have brought gold and silver trophies from representative folk festivals in France, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey etc. Together with acknowledgements and invitations to perform again, we also establish friendship with numerous folklore groups from all over the world. The ensamble realized a great number of concerts all over ex Yugoslavia. International festivals were mostly manifestation - festivals, at competition - festivals the ensemble was awarded by numerous prizes such as: Agrigento "Gold Temple Award" (The Agrigento Festival is among the oldest and most prestigious folklore festivals in Europe), Susa «Castagna d'oro» (Golden Chestnut), Dijon «Friendship trophy».
The premises of KUD "Baščaršija" are decorated by hundreds of cups, letters of thanks, and other decorations. All these decorations are dear to us, bur the favorite one is acknowledgment given by numerous generations of our members. Strong friendships, marriages among our members, their children and grandchildren as our members, these are acknowledgements which confirm the fact that it is an honor and privilege to be a member of this prestigious society. Children ballet group, children folklore group, three youth folklore groups, folk orchestra, traditional instrument's section, reciting section and veteran folklore group. We have 220 members.
Leaders of the sections and management of KUD «Baščaršija» are young experts, whose folklore career started in this society. They transfer their knowledge obtained in seminars and folklore schools to younger generations, with help of experts from musical and folklore field.
